Queensland's 'open data revolution' continues under the stewardship of Premier Campbell Newman, who wants the State's open data initiative to become one of the world's best. On 3rd April he will be headlining the launch event, 'Opening the Vault', which is intended to establish a forum for industry, government and the community to innovate with open government data. A capacity audience will hear an industry facilitator and a variety of panel members address the 'Why' and the 'How' of open data.

Queensland is set to take the lead on the open data front. Premier Campbell Newman's 'open data revolution' and broader commitment to open government represent a real step forward. With its information blueprint and some meaningful commitments in this area, Queensland's government appears committed to making progress.

A recently-published report observes that many Australian government agencies have insufficient technical expertise and capacity to deliver on their commitment to Open Public Sector Information (PSI).

With the onset of the global financial crisis and volatility in markets, governments world over have been left grappling with a plethora of issues concerning unemployment, public spending, welfare measures etc.

In today’s organisations, information is a valued business asset and when exploited effectively it can act as a key differentiator in driving their success.

Big Data is understandably a big rage within industry today, and organisations are rapidly developing strategies to acquire more data from across their varied channels of interactions with customers and clients. Organisations are driving their Big Data strategy towards acquiring larger pools of data, and increasingly focused on finding wider platforms for applications.

The idea that a command and control system should be founded on a managed cycle of information gathering, understanding, decision and action is not new.  John Boyd’s ‘OODA Loop’ (Boyd, The Essence of Winning and Losing, 1995) was first presented in a different context, but now underpins a good deal of development and practice in the command and control field.  We have found that the OODA Loop is a particularly useful model when time and dispersal are important factors.
